Student unions in Lusaka have publicly distanced themselves from the recent disruption of a Patriotic Front (PF) meeting that was interrupted by police due to a lack of prior notification to the authorities. The meeting, which took place at Crest Lodge, was attended by around 40 students who were eager to hear from former President Edgar Lungu.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed that the gathering was halted after law enforcement received word about the event. He stressed that the organizers and participants were reminded to follow established protocols, which mandate notifying the police ahead of hosting public gatherings. The attendees were dispersed without any further incidents following the intervention.
In response to the situation, several student unions, including the University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU), Evelyn Hone College Students Union (EHCOSU), National Institute of Public Administration Student Union (NIPASU), and Natural Resource Development College Students Union (NARDESU), released statements disassociating themselves from the event. They rejected claims of affiliation with the Student National League and reaffirmed their dedication to serving students independently of any political influences, condemning the misinformation surrounding their involvement
