President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his pleasure with the residents of Kawambwa for their commitment to democracy during the recent by-elections in Kawama Ward and Lilondo Ward. Following extensive campaigns among various political parties for the vacant Kawambwa Central seat, which arose after MP Nickson Chilangwa was sentenced to five years for malicious property damage, the voters decisively showed their preference. The United Party for National Development (UPND) emerged victorious, with Nason Musonda receiving 5,519 votes, while Danstan Mwansa, the closest contender from the Tonse Alliance’s New Congress Party, garnered 3,896 votes.
According to a statement from the State House Chief Communications Specialist, President Hichilema conveyed his deep appreciation to the electorate for maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral process. He noted that the peaceful nature of the elections and the results are a testament to the country’s commitment to upholding democratic values as outlined in the Constitution. The President also acknowledged the voters in Kawambwa Constituency for choosing UPND’s Nason Musonda, who has made history as the first MP from the ruling party in Luapula Province.
President Hichilema emphasized the importance of accountable, people-centered leadership, urging elected officials to focus on the needs of their constituents. He also congratulated the UPND and its coalition partners on their successful campaign and praised law enforcement for ensuring peace during the election period.
