In a recent press briefing in Choma, Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa urged other political parties to prepare themselves this year in anticipation of the 2026 general elections. He emphasized the importance of having a robust opposition that can provide necessary checks and balances to the government.
Mweetwa expressed concern that many current opposition parties are essentially led by a single individual, lacking clear direction and organizational strength. He called on these parties to hold democratic conventions in 2025 to strengthen their structures and ensure they represent the views of their constituents.
He specifically highlighted the need for political leaders to have legitimate mandates from their party members rather than relying on individual authority. Mweetwa encouraged opposition parties, including the Patriotic Front (PF) and the Tonse Alliance, to seek success in their efforts to reorganize. Ultimately, he stressed that a strong opposition is vital for effective governance and representation of the people.
