My return to politics was driven not by self-interest but by a commitment to defend our shared democracy. The recent election in Kawambwa has affirmed the purpose I articulated on October 28 of last year, and I still stand by those principles. A Call for Opposition Unity
Today, I address you with a sense of gratitude and a strong sense of duty to protect the democracy we all value. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all political parties that participated in the Kawambwa by-election for your bravery and dedication to our electoral democracy and constitutional values. As an opposition, it is vital for us to unite as we look ahead to future elections, such as those in Petauke, to ensure our votes are not scattered. This cooperation is essential.
Despite the political violence, unjust treatment, intimidation, and manipulations during the Kawambwa election, the opposition stood firm, fighting for democracy and our beloved Zambia. I commend you all for showcasing to the world that Zambia still has passionate defenders of democracy. Let’s collaborate, learn from one another, strategize, and reinforce our strength as we gear up for upcoming elections. Together, as a united opposition, we can achieve significant progress for the people of Zambia. Renewed Resolve and Commitment
In light of the manipulation observed in the recent election by the UPND, we find the motivation to fortify our determination and move forward. The Kawambwa by-election has imparted three crucial lessons that we must remember:
Understanding UPND Tactics: This election has given us critical insight into the strategies employed by the UPND to secure victory. We will use this knowledge to develop more effective counter-strategies for the future.
Highlighting Their Desperation: The lengths the UPND went to in order to win this election were apparent. We carefully documented each act of intimidation and malpractice we encountered. This will not only serve as evidence but also as a warning to Zambians and the international community regarding the UPND’s willingness to undermine democracy.
Strengthening Electoral Integrity: The experiences from Kawambwa underscore the urgent need for improvements in our electoral systems to safeguard both our ballots and democracy. I call on our supporters and the donor community to assist in this endeavor. Ensuring the integrity of our electoral process is vital for maintaining democracy, peace, and unity in Zambia. A Commitment to Peace and Democracy
Let us reflect on a wise saying: “If you win by cheating, you have already lost.” While the UPND may proclaim their victory in Kawambwa, they have forfeited the trust and respect of the Zambian people. We will tirelessly safeguard our democracy, as it underpins the peace we have enjoyed since our independence.
The recent by-election in Kawambwa highlighted significant failings in our electoral process, falling short of both international standards and the expectations of the Zambian people, especially those in Kawambwa. Reports indicated voter intimidation, blatant manipulations, and a disregard for the principles essential for free and fair elections. These actions not only compromise this election but also erode trust in the entire electoral system, affecting future votes. Let us remain steadfast in our demand for free, fair, and credible elections in Zambia and continue to uphold our constitutional democracy! May God bless Zambia, and may peace and justice prevail always. Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu Sixth President of Zambia Tonse Alliance Chairman PF President
